The city of Las Vegas is the most populous city in Nevada! It sits in the seat of Clark County and is known for gambling, shopping, fine dining, casinos and a resort city. It is also known as the Entertainment Capital of the World to some. Although, aside from the exciting city life, it is a growing family and retirement city. In 2010, the Census Bureau of the US said that the population is 583,756, but that the population estimate of the Las Vegas metropolitan area was more like 1,951,269.

The city of Las Vegas is found on the Mojave desert floor. The environment is desert vegetation and some wildlife. Flash Floods are also seen frequently in the area. The city sits in a basin surrounded by dry mountains. On the west lies the Spring Mountains. The landscape of the area is dusty and rocky, although the city has been beautified and is filled with lawns, trees and lots of greenery.

The Las Vegas area enjoys sunshine year round! And has less than 4.2 inches of rain a year. Rain is said to only occur on 29 days per year. June through September are very hot and dry, making it a great place to hang out by the pool or go walk down Las Vegas Boulevard. The winters in Las Vegas are very mild and are short. Rarely does snow fallen in the valley.

The census said that there are 211,689 households in the main city of Las Vegas, of which only 117,538 were families. There are 190,724 housing units in the city. The median income for the area was $53,000, and for families $58,465.

Las Vegas has one of the highest divorce rates in the country. This is due to the fact that it’s easier to get divorces in Nevada than most other states, and so many people come across the country for its easier process. For the same reason, Las Vegas has one of the highest marriage rates in the United States as well. Las Vegas also has one of the highest suicide rates in the country.

The economy in Las Vegas has influences on the tourism, gaming, conventions and the retail and restaurant industries. The population continues to grow, with makes the increase of homes available. The housing construction industry is one of the fastest growing communities in the US. After the financial crisis of 07-10, Las Vegas has one of the highest foreclosure rates in the country.

Las Vegas is continuing to grow and prosper as time goes on. Construction in the area continues to grow, which increases the opportunity for jobs. The CityCenter finished in 2010 and opened up a large opportunity of jobs to work on the premises. Construction of other casinos and city buildings is expected to increase slowly throughout 2011 and 2012 and in 2013 there will be significant spending and millions of new jobs in the industry.

The cities surrounding Las Vegas include Henderson, Paradise, Enterprise, Boulder City, and Spring Valley.
